History
Carnegie International Camp was developed by Professor Paul Gately at Leeds Metropolitan University in 1999 as Britain’s first residential weight loss summer camp for overweight and obese children. Find out more about Professor Gately's story.
Since our establishment as a camp over 8 years ago, we have continued to grow in a variety of ways. We have increased the length of our camp from 6 to 8 weeks and the number of staff from just 1 to a team of 14 year round staff. We have also set up a range of local clubs to ensure year round support and greater access to our successful approach.
Our unique approach to helping children manage their weight effectively is a result of over 15 years of experience. We have helped over 4500 children lose weight from all over the world, increase fitness levels, adopt a healthy lifestyle and improve levels of self-esteem through our scientific approach.
We have now grown our services from our initial residential weight loss camp in 1999 to a range of community day camp and weekend/afterschool clubs across the UK.
Since 2005 we have been also working with health and education authorities to understand how we can help them delivery high quality programmes for children and their families to lose weight and keep their weight off. We have found that many of the organisations that are given the role of fighting childhood obesity are not equipped with the skills and knowledge to successfully support this group. Therefore we now provide consultancy, training and research to ensure the best quality services are available to all.
