About Carnegie Clubs
Carnegie Clubs are a 12 week intervention, with a 12 week follow on for young people and a family member. Designed to support public services provision, this flexible programme can be held after school or at weekends for 3.5 hours per week.
Who is it for?
Our Carnegie Clubs are designed for 8 to 17 years who are overweight to attend with a family member. Check your BMI to see if you fall into the overweight category! (LINK TO BMI CALCULATOR).
Carnegie Clubs are the perfect ongoing support to put the fun back into healthy living!
Is it like a boot camp?
No!
- We don’t take a "no pain to gain" attitude, we have a fun focused approach.
- If you are not having fun we are not doing our jobs!
- We don’t believe in diets! We have a practical and realistic approach which promotes a balance and moderation of everyday foods.
- We believe in making small changes to everyday lifestyles to keep weight off!
What will I do?
The aim of clubs is to put the fun back into exercise so everyone will take part in physical activity from dodge ball to kick boxing. Club members learn about food choices through the lifestyle sessions, and share experiences and challenges with like minded people!
Does is work?
Yes it does! Our curriculum is based on our scientifically proven residential weight loss programme we encourage success in the following areas:
- Safe weight loss
- Decreased body fat
- Increased fitness
- Improved self-esteem
When and where are the camps?
We have delivered Carnegie Clubs in Leeds, Walsall, Isle of Mann and Newark and will soon be announcing more in September so keep your eyes peeled for a club near you or fill out the contact form to register your interest.
How much do they cost?
Carnegie Clubs are usually run in association with children’s services or public health organisations who fund the programme so it is free for local people to access!
Our approach
There are a whole range of factors that lead to people struggling to manage there weight. We recognise this entirely, so our unique approach focuses on four principles that are the key elements to successful weight management.
- Diet
- Physical activity
- Lifestyle
- Social activity
Whilst the diet and physical activity help club members to start to lose weight, the lifestyle sessions are the key to keeping the weight off helping everyone to make informed choices about what food they eat.
Our approach promotes good planning, continual monitoring and family involvement and our results scientifically proven and is not rivalled worldwide so we know our campers can be successful!
What will I do?
The core curriculum covers the four main components that are key to having fun and being healthy and highlights the key topics from our residential programme.
Young people and family members take part in parallel sessions and cover the same topics. This enables families to share experiences making it easier to work through challenges and work together as a team.
We don’t believe in diets!
We are not a fat camp and we do not believe in diets. Diets are unsustainable and unrealistic. We have a practical and realistic approach which is all about balance and moderation of everyday foods. Helping members to work through everyday challenges and making small changes to their own lifestyles to make healthier choices as a family.
What kind of physical activity will I do?
We are not a boot camp! At the heart of everything, is a belief that everyone should be enjoying themselves. Therefore, the physical activity takes the form of fun based games. Remember, everyone is in the same boat, so you can have fun in a supportive environment where the main aim is to have the most fun and to try your best!
You will get the chance to take part in lots of activities you may never have tried before from dodge ball, kick boxing to the club’s own games such as capture the flag!
By the end of the programme club members will have gained the confidence and core skills to take part in mainstream physical activity.
What are lifestyle sessions?
Lifestyle sessions help everyone to understand how food and activity influences their weight and health. Everyone is encouraged to set and monitor their own individual goals. Learning how to make small changes to their own daily routines is the key to a healthy lifestyle.
What is the social activity?
Being part of the programme means that you are surrounded by people in exactly the same position and the staff members who are always there for you. This supportive and positive environment helps everyone to make new friends with like minded people and to set up support networks with people in the same area to put the learning’s of Clubs into practice at home.
Does is work?
Yes! We take the key principles from our residential weight loss programme which has the most amount of published scientific evidence not rivalled worldwide. Therefore we encourage success in the following areas:
- Safe weight loss
- Reduced body fat
- Increased fitness levels
To make sure that every camper loses weight safely and gets the most out of the team of experts monitor campers throughout the programme.
What are the staff like?
A ratio of one member of staff to every five club members guarantees that everyone has the individual attention needed to gain maximum benefit from the Clubs programme.
The team is specialised in the areas of obesity management, weight loss, health, physical education, exercise science, nutrition and child development which provides a safe, effective and fun experience for all.
Why do family members come along too?
Yes! The whole clubs programme is set up so that a family member comes along with the young person so families can work as a team and encourage and support each other to live healthier lifestyles.
