Consultancy

Carnegie Weight Management is a leader in providing safe, fun and effective treatment programmes for overweight and obese children. If we in turn hope to maximise our impact on the health and well being of not only the families we work with, but also our wider society, then we need to provide strategic planning advice for obesity care pathway development.

We can help PCTs, Local Education Authorities, Public and Private sector organisations set up specialist treatment programmes in any number of forms from camps, weekend/monthly/after-school clubs and awareness campaigns.

CWM Building Capacity and Capability:

CWM have been working to ensure capacity and capability building with partners since 2002. Thus, through these experiences and through support from the Business Development Team within Leeds Metropolitan University we have the materials, management capability and management process methodologies to successfully roll this model out on a national/regional level. The following activities would be undertaken to specifically support capacity and capability building in public sector organisations.

Obesity Care Pathway Implementation Programme

This involves a full review and update of the local obesity strategy with addition of more specific details associated with the implementation of a range of treatment services to ensure that the full talents and abilities of the workforce are realised in line with the changing requirements of the public sector services and issue of obesity. These include: processes and procedures (including sensitive communication) for identification and referral of children to weight management services; marketing and communications associated with raising awareness of the issue and treatment services; resources, training and guidance on weight management practices; targets, management of special cases; audit and evaluation of services; partnership and signposting of additional and follow up processes to ensure long term healthy weight management.

Communication

With the provision of a range of additional programmes there is a need to market and raise awareness with a number of stakeholders including: children and families as well as those in professional roles working with children, including teachers, school nurse, GP’s Paediatricians etc. There is clear evidence that parents, school teachers and health care professionals do not accurately identify overweight and obese children. Thus, it cannot be underestimated the importance of raising awareness and effective communications when dealing with this group. We provide standardised marketing materials and a successful PR plan to support promotion of the programmes.

Evaluation

All of our programmes have a built in evaluation (see table 1).  Each evaluation collects quantitative and qualitative data (children, families and trainers) during and following the programmes. These findings are then used to inform local best practice and where necessary disseminated to ensure continued development and communication of good practice. Additional aspects of the evaluative process i.e. research governance, ethical approval and insurance are alos provided by undertaken by CWM.
